John Mayes is a highly respected commercials editor with an illustrious career spanning more than 25 years. Alongside editor Tim Thornton-Allan, he co-founded Marshall Street Editors in 1999, which quickly became one of London's premier film editing companies. His work has been recognized with numerous awards from prestigious organizations such as the British Arrows, Creative Circle and D&AD.
Throughout his career, John has crafted compelling advertising campaigns for a wide array of top brands including Adidas, British Airways, Marks & Spencer, Tesco, McDonald's, giffgaff and Aldi where he is credited for being one of the team responsible for the ’birth’ of Kevin The Carrot.
Working on location or at the studio is something John has been doing all his editing career. He has edited all over the world even while steaming up the Nile in Egypt editing the film ‘Death on the Nile‘.
Working on set means getting involved right from the start of a project, doing boards and animatics to rough comps and approvals on shots as they are being filmed. Seeing it right through post production to being aired. He is also equally happy working remotely.
During the Brit Pop era, John cemented his reputation as one of the leading music editors, collaborating with iconic bands like Blur, Pulp, Oasis, and acclaimed artists such as Fat Boy Slim and Led Zeppelin.
His creative influence extends beyond commercials and music videos, and he also enjoys working on longform drama and short films.
With a wealth of experience, exceptional creative instincts, and a proven track record of delivering memorable and effective content, John continues to be recognised for his creative excellence, combining technical expertise with a distinctive storytelling approach that delivers impactful and memorable work.
